Mastering Communication with Phrasal Verbs

Hey there!

As you might have seen on our social media channels, we have been running a new 14-Day Challenge at The English Life Academy. This one has been particularly exciting - it is about Phrasal Verbs and we are now on Day 9!

So far, we have covered over 20 phrasal verbs through videos, quizzes and activities to help sharpen our student's English skills.

But, what is the challenge all about? It is a 2-week immersion designed to boost every aspect of your English - from vocabulary to fluency. Do not worry if you are “late to the party”. You can join at any time and work at your own pace!

Today, we are revisiting Day 3: Phrasal Verbs for Communication. Whether you are presenting at work, chatting with friends or navigating debates, these phrasal verbs are essential. Plus, we have attached the exclusive explanatory video recorded for our academy members - now available for you, too!

Let’s break down these phrasal verbs:

Phrasal Verbs for Communication:

Bring up (to introduce or mention a topic)

  • e.g. She decided to bring up the issue in the meeting

  • Common mistake: Don’t confuse this with bring (e.g. I’ll bring the book next time ≠ I’ll bring up the book in the conversation)

Talk over (to discuss thoroughly, often to reach a decision)

  • e.g. They talked over the proposal before making a decision

  • Common mistake: The context is important - talk over someone can also mean to interrupt them

Back down (to withdraw from a position or argument)

  • e.g. She refused to back down from her stance on the issue

  • Common mistake: Don’t mix this up with back up (e.g. I’ll back you up = support ≠ I’ll back down = withdraw)

Touch on (to briefly mention a subject)

  • e.g. She touched on the main points in her presentation

  • Common mistake: Avoid using touch alone in this context (I’ll touch the issue is incorrect)

Quick Summary:

Bring up = introduce a topic

Talk over = discuss in detail

Back down = withdraw from an argument

Touch on = mention briefly

Master these and you will see an immediate improvement in how naturally you communicate in English. You will also understand native speakers much better!
